The newly founded European School of Literary Translation (ESLT) aims to support professional literary translation by creating a sustainable pan-European infrastructure for the education of literary translation teachers. ESLT will contribute to enhancing the quality of literary translations and, consequently, to the promotion of European cultural and literary diversity and the European ideal of a shared European culture.

ESLT involves four European partner organisations: British Centre for Literary Translation (BCLT (http://www NULL.bclt NULL.org NULL.uk)), Centre of Expertise for Literary Translation (ELV (http://www NULL.literairvertalen NULL.org)), University of Rome Link (http://linkinternational NULL.eu/) Campus and Fondazione San Pellegrino (Fusp (http://www NULL.fusp NULL.it)). The collaboration is a result of the PETRA-E Network, a European network of institutions dedicated to the education and training of literary translators.

ESLT will start off with a summer school, ‘Training the teacher of literary translation’, which will take place in Rome, from 12 to 15 September 2017.

The Summer School will bring together 20 translators and educators from across Europe who are passionate about teaching literary translation. The three-day programme includes a mixture of keynote lectures, panel discussions, seminars, workshops and one-to-one mentoring sessions. Topics include revising and editing translations, evaluation and assessment, and the role of literary translation theory in a practical curriculum. ESLT will implement the PETRA-E Framework for the Education and Training of Literary Translators.

Candidates will be selected among:

  • confirmed literary translators
  • educational staff in international curricula of literary translation or junior starters with educational ambition
  • motivated teachers with the ambition to professionalize educational skills in literary translation

Application procedure: the candidates for the Summer School 2017 will be selected by the four participating institutions.
