The Art Foundation NRW (North Rhine-Westphalia) in cooperation with the EUK Straelen (‘European Translators’ College’) have given this year’s Straelen Translation Award for lifetime work to Marianne Gareis and Michael Kegler for their translations from Brazilian Portuguese.
With this year’s choice the € 25,000 award, the richest literary prize in the whole German-speaking region, aims to highlight the wide spectrum of Brazilian literature from the beginning of modern times till the present, and is being divided between these two of its representatives.
Marianne Gareis is honoured in particular for Dom Casmurro, her translation of Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis’s novel of the same name, while Michael Kegler’s translation Es waren viele Pferde (Eles eram muitos cavalos), a novel by Luiz Ruffato, attracted special attention.
The prize will be presented on 11 July 2014 at the EUK Straelen.
