On the (repeated) request of the Flemish Authors Association (VAV), the Minister of Culture will award the first Flemish Culture Prize for translation on March 24. This triennial award will go to a translator of a literary work into Dutch; within four years a prize will be awarded to a translator of a literary work from Dutch. Not before time, VAV firmly believes: “Within the ‘guild’ of writers, translators are a particularly vulnerable group, and symbolically it is a good thing to honor them with a prize.” Since 2003 Flemish Culture Prizes have been awarded in various cultural disciplines, but until now literary translation has been missing.
