EIZIE organised three different activities in Warsaw through the ‘New Translators’ program.
This year, several talks about translation were offered through the New Translators (https://eizie NULL.eus/en/events/itzultzaile_berriak) program. Under the motto “Translation, bridge between cultures”, three events were organised by EIZIE in conjunction with the Etxepare Basque Institute (https://www NULL.etxepare NULL.eus/en) for the specific purpose of speaking about the importance of translation in Basque literature (and culture).
Writer and translator Danele Sarriugarte, translator Katarzyna Sosnowska, EIZIE representative Arantzazu Royo, and teacher and researcher Aitor Arruza attended the conference in late November 2019.
On the first day, November 28, the representatives from the Basque Country visited the Institute of Iberian and Ibero-American Studies (https://www NULL.iberystyka NULL.uw NULL.edu NULL.pl/en) at the University of Warsaw, with Aitor Arruza as their guide. After a short talk, they joined a translation workshop with students studying Basque.
The next day, November 29, there was a roundtable discussion at the Cervantes Institute in Warsaw (https://varsovia NULL.cervantes NULL.es/pl/default NULL.shtm) on the topic of translation between dominant and minority languages. Catalan writer and translator Abel A. Murcia, Danele Sarriugarte, and Katarzyna Sosnowska participated in a lively and interesting talk about literary translation, with Aitor Arruza as moderator. Attendees also learned about the newly published Polish translation of Atxaga’s Gizona bere bakardadean (The Lone Man) from its translator, Katarzyna Sosnowska.
At noon on Saturday, November 30, the representatives from the Basque Country and Polish professional translators met at the Polish Literary Translators’ Association (http://stl NULL.org NULL.pl/english/) for a meal and further conversation in a session moderated by Katarzyna Sosnowska.
