The PETRA-E(ducation) Framework for Literary Translation, which maps out a literary translator’s competencies, has been completed.
The Framework addresses the recommendations highlighted during the initial PETRA 2011 conference on the teaching of literary translation in Europe. On 26 August, the final meeting of the PETRA-E Project was held in the Collège Européen des Traducteurs Littéraires de Seneffe. The Framework of Reference, now available in eight languages (Dutch, English, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Spanish and Bulgarian – Portuguese to follow soon), was officially presented to Konrad Fuhrmann, a representative of the European Commission. Many institutions have already shown an interest in the Framework, and a number of launch events are being planned in different European countries. The new Translators Association First Translation Prize has been won by the translator Bela Shayevich and her editor at Fitzcarraldo, Jacques Testard, for Second-Hand Time by Nobel laureate Svetlana Alexievich. The £2,000 prize was set up by translator Daniel Hahn with the Society of Authors and support from the British Council with his own 25,000€ winnings from the International Dublin literary award, which he won in 2017 with his translation A General Theory of Oblivion, a novel by José Eduardo Agualusa. The new call for applications for the Literary Translation sub-programme of EU’s Creative Europe programme is now online (http://eacea NULL.ec NULL.europa NULL.eu/creative-europe/funding/literary-translation-2015_en). Publishers can apply by 4 February, 2015. Please note that the application procedure has been changed since the start of Creative Europe.
