This year, for the eighth time, the Warsaw branch of EUNIC (European Union National Institutes for Culture), the European Commission Representation in Poland, and the Polish Literary Translators Association will host an event for International Translation Day – a holiday celebrated worldwide every 30 September, the Feast Day of St. Jerome (author of the first translation of the Bible into Latin, and patron saint of translators). The goal of the event is to draw attention to the essential role of translators in the reception of foreign literature and culture and to make readers aware that translators are, through their work, co-authors of world literature. The PETRA-E Project continues as the PETRA-E Network

On 26 August, the final meeting of the PETRA-E Project was held in the Collège Européen des Traducteurs Littéraires de Seneffe. The Framework of Reference, now available in eight languages (Dutch, English, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Spanish and Bulgarian – Portuguese to follow soon), was officially presented to Konrad Fuhrmann, a representative of the European Commission. Many institutions have already shown an interest in the Framework, and a number of launch events are being planned in different European countries. Turkish translator Necmiye Alpay (70) unjustly imprisoned without trial

On 31 August 2016, Turkish translator, editor, critic, author and linguist Necmiye Alpay (70) was arrested. Alpay is a member of the Turkish Association of Translators (ÇEVBİR).

Alpay received her BA degree from Ankara University, and her Ph.D. degree from Paris University at Nanterre. She has translated numerous works into Turkish, including those of Said, Girard, Ricoeur and Marchand. Moreover, she has devoted much of her efforts to improving the quality of written Turkish, and has penned several books on the subject. Alpay has also worked as an editor for various periodicals, and has contributed regularly to several newspapers. […]

Accommodation for translators and writers in Stockholm

Foreign translators and writers are welcome at the Writers’ House Guest Rooms at Drottninggatan 88C in Stockholm to work, visit publishers or libraries, or simply spend a few days in the capital going to theatres and museums. Many Swedish writers and translators stay here as well, but guests from abroad have priority.

The Writers’ House provides four single rooms in the very centre of Stockholm (a double room can be arranged upon special request). The rooms are furnished with a standard bed, a small desk and an office chair. Guests share a bathroom with shower and WC, as well a separate WC. There is a shared living room with a small balcony, and a large, fully equipped kitchen. WiFi internet is provided. […]

The PETRA-E(ducation) Framework for Literary Translation, which maps out a literary translator’s competencies, has been completed.

The Framework addresses the recommendations highlighted during the initial PETRA 2011 conference on the teaching of literary translation in Europe. The PETRA 2011 conference recommended the development of a learning framework which can be used to develop the education of literary translators, and also to create opportunities for collaboration and exchange between schools and universities teaching literary translation. The Institut Ramon Llull has opened the second call for grants to promote Catalan literature internationally in the following fields:

Translation of literature and philosophy
These grants are available to anyone who is planning to translate works of Catalan literature (fiction, poetry, theatre and graphic novels) and philosophy into other languages during the year the application process takes place or the following year. Applicants must have acquired the rights to publish the work in print format and distribute it commercially. Applications should be sent by 31 October 2016 at the latest. […]

CEATL AGM held in Barcelona 2-4 June 2016

The Annual General Meeting of CEATL’s national representatives, was held in Barcelona between 2 – 4 June 2016 and organised by AELC, ACEC and ACE Traductores.

The AGM opened with an exhibition of posters with SWOT analyses of the individual associations. After the traditional short presentation round, the AGM voted on the acceptance of two new members, the Macedonian Translators Association, MATA – Здружение на преведувачи на Република Македонија, and the Romanian Association of Literary Translators, ARTLIT – Asociația Română a Traducătorilor Literari. With the admission of these two new members, CEATL now consists of more than 35 translators’ associatons from countries across Europe. […]
