This year CEATL’s competition has been an international picture contest called “The Face of Translation”. CEATL invited photo amateurs to create sparky and clever photographs reflecting the existence and importance of literary translations and literary translators, their challenges, and their role in literature. Any topic could be used, as long as it was in some way related to literary translation. The prize – a 200 Euro voucher for dinner and books — will be awarded on International Translation Day, 30th September 2016. Major presence of Polish translators at Warsaw Book Fair (19-22 May 2016)

From 19 to 22 May the Warsaw Book Fair was held at the National Stadium in Warsaw. The Polish Literary Translators’ Association has already co-hosted events at the Fair in the past and this year the association had an even stronger presence.

On 19 May the Jerome Lion award ceremony took place. The first ever trophy, awarded to a publisher for supporting literary translators was presented to Wydawnictwo Czarne. Justyna Czechowska, the chair of the award committee, also talked to Monika Sznajderman, head of Wydawnictwo Czarne, about the publisher’s collaboration with translators. […]

2016 Leipzig Book Fair Translation Prize and 2016 Straelen Translation Award go to Brigitte Döbert

This month, the German author, editor and translator Brigitte Döbert was awarded two important prizes for her translation of Die Tutoren, the monumental novel by the Serbian author Bora Ćosić, who left Serbia 1992 in protest against the regime. The 800-page cult epic tells the story of five generations and uses a vast array of literary techniques and genres, from farmer’s almanac and folk legend, to instruction manals, quotes from James Joyce, kitchen recipes and imaginary concoctions, constituting an enormous literary compendium of the Serbian language and gaining it a reputation for being hugely challenging for translators. Groundbreaking contractual agreement with independent publishers in Italy

On 3rd April 2016 a groundbreaking document was signed between ODEI (the Italian Observatory of Independent Publishers), STRADE (the Italian Union of Translators working in the publishing industry), and the SLC-CGIL (Italian Union of Communication Workers, which STRADE is joining to represent translators). These associations signed a code of practice for a fair relationship between publishers and translators. The code provides a series of guidelines: ‘Five Points for a Fair, Legal and Transparent Translation Contract’. […]

The Jerome Lion: An award for publishers supporting literary translators

The Polish Literary Translators’ Association has announced that the publisher Wydawnictwo Czarne is to be awarded the first ever Jerome Lion for supporting literary translators. Their publishing activities have demonstrated an appreciation of the importance of competent translators and a respect for translators’ work at every stage of the collaboration by offering honest contracts, staying in touch throughout the editorial process, respecting the translator’s opinion on difficult or contentious issues, promptly paying fees, and giving due recognition to the input of the translator in the presentation of the final publication.
